Choosing Slow, Sustainable Growth as an Author

Choosing print-on-demand was intentional. I didn’t want excess stock or unsold books being pulped. I wanted each copy printed because someone genuinely chose it.

When I published my first picture book, I knew I didn’t want to chase noise.

No pressure to go viral.
No large print runs sitting in boxes.
No urgency for quick wins.

Instead, I chose a slower, more sustainable path.

Recently, something small but meaningful happened. One copy of my book quietly travelled to Italy. No paid advertising. No targeted campaign. Just steady sharing and consistent presence.

It felt like a quiet reminder: growth doesn’t have to be loud to be real.

The Value of Organic Growth

In nature, growth takes time. Seeds don’t sprout overnight, and ecosystems aren’t built in a single season.

As an independent children’s author, I want my work to grow the same way.

My first month of sales came mainly from friends and family. The second month brought orders from people I didn’t know. Now, a book has travelled beyond the UK.

It isn’t dramatic.
But it’s steady.
And steady growth lasts.

Why Sustainable Publishing Matters

Choosing print-on-demand was intentional. I didn’t want excess stock or unsold books being pulped. I wanted each copy printed because someone genuinely chose it.

For me, sustainable book publishing is about more than materials, it’s about mindset.

Build carefully.
Grow thoughtfully.
Create for the long term.

Twenty-five percent of profits from my books are donated to wildlife and conservation charities. The stories themselves are rooted in British habitats and seasonal change. It wouldn’t feel right to build that message in a way that creates unnecessary waste.

Building for the Long Term

With my second book launching soon, it’s easy to focus on numbers. Sales, rankings, visibility.

But I’m not trying to build a moment.

I’m building a body of work.

Eight titles are planned in the Wild Britain: Habitat Tales series. Each book will add to the collection – individual stories, but stronger together.

Just like nature.

A Quiet Reminder

If you’re building something slowly, this is your reassurance:

Progress doesn’t need to be explosive to be meaningful.

A review from a stranger.
A local preschool ordering copies.
A book travelling quietly across borders.

These are roots growing.

And roots are what last.
