There’s something magical about spending a day at the beach.
Beyond building sandcastles and paddling in the sea, the coast is full of fascinating wildlife, hidden treasures, and opportunities for children to connect with nature.
Here are five simple beach activities that will encourage little explorers to slow down, look closely, and discover the amazing world around them.
1. Create a Beach Treasure Hunt
Before you head to the beach, make a list of things to look for.
Can you find:
- A smooth pebble
- A feather
- Three different shells
- Seaweed in two different colours
- A crab shell
- Driftwood
- A heart-shaped stone
Remember to leave anything that’s still home to a living creature exactly where you found it.
2. Become a Wildlife Spotter
The seaside is home to all sorts of amazing animals.
See how many you can spot:
- Oystercatchers
- Gulls
- Ringed plovers
- Sand hoppers
- Crabs
- Jellyfish (look, don’t touch!)
- Tiny fish in rock pools
Take binoculars if you have them and watch quietly from a distance. You might notice behaviours you’ve never seen before.
3. Build Nature Art
Instead of taking treasures home, use them to create temporary artwork on the beach.
Arrange shells into patterns, build a spiral with pebbles, or decorate a sandcastle with seaweed and driftwood.
When the tide comes in, your artwork will disappear naturally, leaving nothing behind except your memories.
4. Explore a Rock Pool
Rock pools are like tiny underwater worlds.
Look carefully for:
- Hermit crabs
- Tiny shrimp
- Sea snails
- Anemones
- Small fish
Move slowly and gently, and avoid lifting rocks or disturbing the creatures. They rely on these little pools as their homes until the tide returns.
5. Listen to the Beach
Sometimes the best activity is simply to stop and listen.
Close your eyes for a minute and see what you can hear.
Can you hear:
- Waves crashing?
- Seagulls calling?
- The wind?
- Pebbles rolling with the tide?
- Children laughing?
Encouraging children to use all of their senses helps them notice far more than they would by rushing from one activity to the next.
Leave Only Footprints
The beach is home to many incredible creatures, from tiny crabs to nesting birds. Always take your litter home, leave wildlife undisturbed, and remember that shells or driftwood may still be someone’s home.
