There’s something wonderfully calming about simple, hands-on play.
This homemade nature playdough is soft, easy to make, and coloured using gentle, natural ingredients you may already have in your kitchen. It’s a lovely way to slow down, get creative, and bring a little bit of the natural world into your home.
Perfect for quiet afternoons, rainy days, or after a nature walk.

What You’ll Need
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup warm water
Natural colourings:
Turmeric (for warm yellow tones)
Cocoa powder (for earthy browns)
Fresh blended spinach or spinach powder (for soft greens)
Fresh blended raspberry or strawberry (for light pink)
Fresh blended blueberry (for lilac)

How to Make Your Playdough
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt.
- Add the oil and gradually pour in the warm water, stirring as you go.
- Bring the mixture together into a dough and knead until smooth.
- Divide the dough into smaller portions.
- Add a small amount of your chosen natural colouring to each piece and knead until the colour is evenly blended.
If the dough feels a little sticky, add a sprinkle of flour. If it’s too dry, a tiny splash of water will help.
A Gentle Note on Natural Colours
One of the lovely things about using natural ingredients is that the colours are soft and earthy rather than bright and bold.
Each batch may turn out slightly different and that’s part of the charm.Turmeric creates a warm, sunshine yellow.
Cocoa gives a rich, earthy brown.
Spinach makes a gentle, meadow green.

Play Ideas Inspired by Nature
Once your playdough is ready, you can use it to explore the natural world through play:
- Roll little hedgehogs, birds, or foxes
- Create tiny nests with eggs
- Press in leaves, twigs, or shells to make patterns
- Shape flowers, trees, and woodland scenes
This kind of open-ended play encourages creativity while quietly building a connection to nature.
A Note for Grown-Ups and Little Explorers
Simple activities like this can be a lovely way to slow down and spend time together.
There’s no right or wrong way to play. Just small hands, a bit of imagination, and the freedom to create.
If you’ve recently been out exploring, you might like to bring a few safe, natural treasures home to use alongside your playdough.

- It should last for a week or two
